Five-Minute Coach tip: coaching conversations

· Five-Minute Coach tips

Bringing a coaching style into our conversations is easy to do and can be very impactful. Using just one simple Five-Minute Coach question such as “And what would you like to have happen?” can alter the flow of a conversation in an instant. When you hear someone grumbling and complaining – especially when they’re doing it repeatedly – just ask the Stage One question. Or, when you notice someone has been working on a problem but sounds really stuck when they talk about it, again just ask the question “And what would you like to have happen?” You focus their attention on a future possibility rather than the current issue, which in turn changes thinking and allows new possibilities to emerge. That is a productive coaching conversation!
